You Think My Skin is Tough?

You don’t know me.
The toughness is in layers,
As things are buried deep inside.

Those layers go to my soul,
I have to dig myself out.
It feels like a big hole,
As the layers peel away.

It is scary to see in some places,
Knowing that your life was so full of pain.
To watch the hole grow larger,
Your life unfolds you will never be the same.

I keep digging and praying,
That someday I will become me.
There are days it seems possible,
Then there are days like today.

Escape is not easy,
When you are running from yourself.
Bury your head in the sand,
Or just take me as I am.
